The lens of social machines can be effectively applied to new developments in musical production and theory. Musical analysis has traditionally been conducted by individuals and on a small scale. However, new computational approaches, combined with the availability of huge data volumes, are reshaping musical research to make substantive corpuses of analyses available in common frameworks for music scholars and students, and many stakeholders are working on develop new tools to deal with these corpuses.
The Musical Social Machines project investigates the new social machines that are currently developing within musical theory and practice, which provides an alternative perspective on the role of social machines in understanding popular culture.
